Rhode Island has opened a $2.5 million grant round for cleaning up contaminated properties so they can be reused, with applications due at 4 p.m. Friday, Dec. 11, 2026.

The Department of Environmental Management's Nov. 2 announcement says public agencies, private applicants and nonprofit organizations may seek funding. Proposals connected to housing redevelopment receive preference in the scoring.

The properties are often called brownfields: sites where contamination, or concern about contamination, complicates reuse. Projects are selected competitively.

This round uses the first $2.5 million of the $5 million brownfields allocation from the 2024 Green Bond.

Applications must be submitted electronically to DEM.BrownfieldBG@dem.ri.gov; the agency says it will not accept paper copies. Applicants should review the funding instructions for eligible expenses, required documentation and scoring before filing.
