Rhode Island health officials are urging people to check measles vaccination before holiday travel, allowing time to speak with a healthcare professional and build protection before leaving.
The Rhode Island Department of Health's Oct. 29 notice says immunity begins building about two weeks after vaccination. It cites outbreaks in parts of New York and Pennsylvania, as well as Canada and Mexico.
MMR protects against measles, mumps and rubella. Measles spreads readily between people and can cause severe illness, the department says.
Infants 6 to 11 months old traveling internationally or to an outbreak area should receive one MMR dose before travel and still receive the two routine doses after their first birthday, according to the notice. Parents should discuss timing with their child's healthcare professional.
RIDOH can make vaccine available at no cost for families with insurance issues or difficulty accessing care. Clinic information is available at health.ri.gov/vaccine-clinics or 401-222-5960, Monday-Friday, 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m.
