UConn has signed a five-year memorandum of understanding with Democritus University of Thrace to collaborate on energy research and workforce training in Greece.

The memorandum was signed Oct. 23 and announced by UConn on Oct. 29. The work concerns the Alexandroupolis energy hub, including research related to liquefied natural gas, which is cooled into liquid form for transport.

The universities plan work on environmental monitoring, coastal and wildfire risks, public health and student exchanges.

UConn engineering Dean JC Zhao and Democritus University Rector Maria Michalopoulou signed the memorandum.

The memorandum sets a framework for joint research and training; the individual projects remain to be developed.
