The University of Rhode Island College of Nursing has started an initiative to examine working conditions and ways to retain nurses.
Nursing leaders and administrators from Rhode Island and Massachusetts met Oct. 20 at the Rhode Island Nursing Education Center in Providence. URI described the meeting in an Oct. 23 announcement.
Participants discussed orientation and residency programs for new nurses, more flexible scheduling, and financial incentives for preceptors, the experienced nurses who train new colleagues. They also considered lower patient-to-nurse ratios and the design of hospital units.
The initiative is being led by nursing Dean Danny Willis. The university described the meeting as the start of a continuing effort.
