Vermont has awarded just over $3.7 million in downtown and village center tax credits to 41 building projects in 31 communities, Gov. Phil Scott's administration announced Oct. 20.

The state estimates the tax credits will support projects with more than $20 million in building improvements.

Housing projects include the planned return of 11 market-rate apartments at 212 Pleasant St. in Bennington, six apartments in a former railroad building at 57 Freight Yard Way in Northfield and 24 apartments in Springfield's former Park Street School.

At 25 South Main St. in Hardwick, the state says the work will preserve six market-rate rental units and restore three vacant storefronts. A project at 88 South Main St. in Waterbury is planned to create three affordable three-bedroom apartments.

The awards also include support for Northern Stage's expansion into the neighboring former VFW building at 97 South Main St. in White River Junction, including a sprinkler system and other work needed to meet building requirements.

The program supports rehabilitation of existing buildings in state-designated centers.
