Boston and its state and federal partners announced more than $16 million Oct. 14 to modernize Fairmount Apartments, a Hyde Park public housing community built in 1951 with more than 200 apartments.
The package includes a $10 million state preservation grant, $5 million in city capital funding and $1 million in federal funding secured by U.S. Rep. Ayanna Pressley and Sens. Edward Markey and Elizabeth Warren, according to the city's announcement. The Boston Public Health Commission is also supporting open space and community gardens.
The first phase would renovate apartment interiors, make 5% of the apartments fully accessible, replace heating and hot-water systems with electric equipment, add cooling and improve exterior walls and other parts of the buildings that control heat loss.
The project also calls for rain gardens and other improvements that absorb and manage stormwater. A related federal investment supports flood protection at Fairmount, Gallivan and Franklin Field, with training for residents through the city's PowerCorps program.
The Boston Housing Authority is beginning a long-term plan for the community alongside the initial renovations, according to its announcement. Neither release gives a construction start date or a total cost for all phases.
