Massachusetts is awarding $2 million to expand apprenticeship programs and training that prepares workers to enter them, the Healey administration announced Oct. 29.

The grants are meant to train and place 295 apprentices and pre-apprentices, according to the administration.

Apprenticeships combine paid work with instruction. Pre-apprenticeships prepare participants for that next step.

Recipients include the MassBioEd of Cambridge, with $195,270 for 26 life-sciences apprentices, and IBEW Local 103 in Boston, with $130,000 for 20 electrical and telecommunications apprentices.

The MBTA received $32,500 for five rail-vehicle maintenance technician apprentices. Urban College of Boston received $50,000 to develop Boston Care Corps, an elder-care program.
