The North Broadway on-ramp to the Henderson Expressway in East Providence is scheduled to close permanently on the night of Friday, Nov. 13, the Rhode Island Department of Transportation announced.

The closure is part of a $39.9 million project to turn the expressway between North Broadway and the Henderson Bridge into a boulevard, demolish the North Broadway bridge over the ramp, remove the ramps and build a roundabout, according to RIDOT's Nov. 4 notice.

For the signed detour, northbound North Broadway drivers will continue roughly a quarter-mile beyond the closed ramp, turn left onto Massasoit Avenue and follow signs toward the bridge roundabout.

Southbound drivers will continue approximately a half-mile, keep right toward Waterman Avenue and follow it to the merge with Massasoit Avenue, which connects to the bridge roundabout. RIDOT provides a detour map.

The project also includes sidewalks, landscaping and two overlooks on the Henderson Bridge. It covers Pawtucket Avenue from Warren Avenue to Marietta Drive, including paving and a rebuilt Waterman Avenue intersection with dedicated left-turn lanes. RIDOT expects that paving to be finished by fall 2027 and the full project in spring 2029.

The budget includes a $25 million federal transportation grant. RIDOT says construction schedules and scope can change.
