Revolution Wind has reached its commercial operation date, marking the completion of construction and the start of commercial power generation under a power purchase agreement, Connecticut officials said Nov. 5.
The 704-megawatt project is about 15 nautical miles southeast of Point Judith, Rhode Island. Connecticut has contracted for 304 megawatts of its capacity, with Rhode Island taking the remaining 400 megawatts, according to Gov. Ned Lamont's office.
The state estimates Connecticut's share will supply about 5% of its electricity demand. A megawatt describes generating capacity; the power actually produced varies with wind conditions.
Construction began in 2023. Lamont said the project weathered challenges from the federal administration.
Lamont said the project will help lower utility costs for families and businesses. Emma Cimino, acting commissioner of the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection, estimated savings for customers in Connecticut and New England of hundreds of millions of dollars a year.
