Rhode Island is recruiting 100 public-school professionals for a training program on responding to student stress, adversity and mental-health needs.

The Rhode Island Department of Education (RIDE) announced the Commissioner's Care Team Oct. 30. Applications submitted before Nov. 18 will receive priority, according to the department's notice.

Teachers, counselors, social workers, psychologists, school-based mental-health providers, nurses, principals and superintendents may apply. RIDE says it will select a group representing different regions, school levels and professional roles.

Participants who complete the training will receive a $1,000 stipend and share what they learn with colleagues in their schools.

Training will come from Stanford University's Building Resilience in Schools program and Pure Edge. The department describes instruction in how stress and adversity affect learning, along with strategies for helping students manage emotions and cope with difficulties.

The department says participants will help train colleagues through professional development within their schools, complementing districts' existing student-support systems. The application is linked in RIDE's announcement.
