Thirty-two Vermont libraries will receive grants for building work through the state's Public Facilities Preservation Initiative, the Department of Libraries announced Oct. 30.

The awards range from $60,000 to $400,000 and cover libraries in 11 counties. The department received 59 applications.

The money will pay for capital projects to maintain, repair or improve existing library buildings. The department said many library buildings need deferred maintenance, safety, energy efficiency and accessibility work, according to the award announcement.

The department is administering congressionally directed funding from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development's fiscal 2023 Economic Initiative Community Project Funding program. Buildings owned by municipalities and incorporated public libraries were eligible.
