University of Vermont Health announced Sept. 15 that it would eliminate 199 positions and create 55, for a net reduction of 144. It projected savings of about $16.8 million.
The system's organizational breakdown counts full-time equivalents rather than individual people. Some affected employees can remain employed in different roles.
UVM Medical Center in Burlington accounts for 118 affected positions. The system attributed most of those changes to closing an unnamed hospital unit and an alternative care pod as its daily patient count declines.
The announcement also identified 28 affected positions in shared services and 24 at Central Vermont Medical Center, where 11 positions were expected to be reposted with revised responsibilities. Helen Porter Rehabilitation & Nursing had 15 affected positions, including seven vacancies and eight employee notifications.
Affected employees were notified Sept. 15 and given a 45-day transition period. Eligible employees who do not secure another position would receive severance. The release does not establish the final number of people losing employment after transfers.
