New Hampshire Attorney General John Formella has joined a bipartisan group of 45 attorneys general urging Congress to pass the Kids Online Safety Act.
Their Nov. 3 letter backs the Senate proposal, S. 1748, and calls for basic safeguards on social-media platforms and online games used by children and teenagers.
The attorneys general back the bill's duty-of-care provision, which they say would set a lasting safety standard for social-media and gaming platforms. They also want states to retain authority to enforce additional protections.
The letter follows a recently announced $17 billion multistate settlement with Meta. Formella's office says that deal requires safeguards for users under 18 on Facebook and Instagram, but an agreement with one company cannot address problems across the industry.
Formella's Nov. 4 announcement identifies the coalition as bipartisan. Attorneys general from all six New England states signed the letter.
