The University of Rhode Island will hold a free public Veterans Day ceremony at noon Tuesday, Nov. 10, in the Hope Room at the Robert J. Higgins Welcome Center in Kingston.

Retired Navy Capt. Mike McCarten, a Cranston native who served 30 years as a Navy physician, will speak. He led a NATO trauma hospital in Kandahar, Afghanistan, during his military career, according to the university's event announcement.

Parking is available behind the welcome center at 45 Upper College Road. Organizers encourage attendees to register through the link in the announcement. The ceremony takes place the day before Veterans Day.

URI also plans public Walking with Weights workshops Nov. 4, with sessions at 10 a.m. and noon in Room 123 of the Tootell Aquatic Center. Army veteran and coach Dan Fahey will lead an hourlong workshop followed by an optional 30-minute practical session.

The activity is also called rucking, meaning walking while carrying weight. Beginners are welcome, the university says. The university encourages workshop attendees to register through the link in its announcement.
